Lisa Jardine, Erasmus, Man of Letters. Now the representation is of amicitia friendship , in the deepened, classical sense—a relationship of intimacy, trust, and mutual service, captured in the literary heritage with the stories of Theseus and Pirithous, Pylades and Orestes. And at the center of this testament to friendship rests a book. Everyone knows everyone else; the names in the group recur throughout. A letter from a Dutch scholar to a German-Swiss printer appears next to one from a French Hellenist to an English student; the letters thus foreshorten space and, in their one language, create the sense of a small, friendly group of humanists, whose conversation revolves around the central subject of Utopia.
Thus the world of Utopia becomes an incident in a long discussion ; it is not a separate book but the central subject of the conversation —a rather lengthy anecdote told to a group of humanists, all of whom listen to it and comment on it. Not only does the atmosphere begin outside Utopia and penetrate into it, but the story itself penetrates into real life and spreads out through the rest of the book. Revard, F. So this letter is more public and less personal than it appears to be. Pagden, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, , p. Hopman, Londres, Phaidon Press, , p. Ong, Ramus : Method, and the Decay of Dialogue.
It aims at moving beyond the mutual misunderstandings that exist between our cultural and religious traditions, and this through in depth research. It pays a close attention to the contemporary evolutions of scholarly research on these topics. Following the thought of Ibn Taymiyya d. Moreover, it ignores their political contexts. We can then ask ourselves how and through the intellectual activity of which social actors does each paradigm base its legitimacy and predominance? From this point of view, the hagiographic discourse on the four founders of the schools of fiqh can be considered as a marker of this proximity to the Prophetic light.
It could also have been a vector of stability and governability. The purpose of this issue of MIDEO is to study the two approaches in greater depth, in the light of the Islamic heritage. Triumph und Scheitern des islamischen Rationalismus im Jahrhundert , Munich, C. Beck, Brill, In the contemporary context of the emergence of an Islamic theology of religious diversity, this edition of MIDEO approaches this theme from a historical point of view which allows us to evaluate the place given to religions from the Islamic perspective.
As some contributions show, the renewal of this perspective has an impact on the perception and normative status accorded to non-Muslims. Click here to access the articles. The interactions and exchanges between Twelver Shiites and Christians, Catholics as well as Protestants, have rarely been studied in detail.
Many of these texts that are preserved in libraries and archives in Europe, as well as Iran and Iraq, still remain to be studied. The conference aims to identify the nature of the intercultural relations according to time, milieu, and geographical zone. What was the role of missionaries?

The articles here allow a confrontation with the sources in order to verify the functional level relevance of the commentaries identified by Wisnovsky, and they contribute to a better knowledge of authors of Arab Muslim patrimony. The volume presents as well issues of the Marrakesh Declaration of 27 January Islam and religions.
The topic is not new. At the time of early Islam, it referred to the relations and interactions between Muslims and non-Muslims. Since the eighties, the question has been subject to a renewed interest, especially because of the influence of the Christian theology. The aim is to question the view of the Koran, the Sunna or some Muslim thinkers towards non-Muslims and their religions. Many questions, otherwise classical, are linked to this theology.
What role does God give to or expect from non-Muslims? How does he judge the actions of a non-Muslim in order to serve him or to serve humanity 4 and what value should be given to the non-Muslim religion in passing on spiritual virtues? What is the theological and legal status of the books other religions? The MIDEO 33 dedicates a file to this topic and welcomes the publication of articles and various texts which can contribute to put into perspective a Muslim theology of religions.
PDF file before April, 1 st to gro. The texts will be corrected in the fall of and the publication is planned for the first quarter of The Mellon Sawyer Seminar, 1 held at the University of California, Berkeley, from October , , addressed the issue of the literary genre of commentary in post-classical Islam 6thrd century A. The organizers wanted to restore honor to the genre of commentary, often ignored by specialists in the various Islamic sciences under the pretext that it would, by nature, lack innovation.
As El Shamsy 2 put it, while modernity was obsessed with the question of originality, postmodernism is preoccupied with hermeneutic circles and language games. He concludes that the present reassessment of the genre of commentary and of scholastic scholarship is not surprising. Commentary is of paramount importance in the post-classical Islamic sciences. It forces thinkers to confront the works of others; to follow their arguments, and to respond to them.
Saleh concludes 4 by suggesting that the system of the Ottoman madrasa epitomizes this mode of transmission of knowledge. More generally, commentary, though one tool among many, plays a role in transmitting and developing the Islamic sciences while at the same time maintaining a strong link with an often idealized past.

Our conference intends to contribute to this research by continuing the investigation begun at the Mellon Sawyer Seminar. We expect to add new fields and provide convincing examples which clarify issues and refine our understanding of the challenges faced by the transmission and interpretation of the Islamic sciences. We also seek to understand if there are historical constants in this matter. One issue deserves more attention: the analysis of commentaries that seem to transmit scribal errors or miscomprehension of texts. Other questions we would like to address are: Do other areas reflect the same seven functions of the commentary that Wisnovsky identified in philosophy?
Can variations in these functions be observed according to the field or era? Which processes govern the canonization of one commentary over another? Do self-commentaries follow fundamentally different criteria? Can we pinpoint particular features in the thought of an author in his own practice of commentary and the function which he intends his commentaries to play? These research questions are based on the results of the Mellon Sawyer Seminar, they do not cover all the aspects of the commentary relations between texts.
We hope your contributions will enrich this fascinating research field. Keynote speakers: Walid A.
